How to Setup a WordPress Website for Your Blog or Business

Tutorials, Website Planning, Working with WordPress

While catching up with a friend you tell her all about this exciting new business of yours. She’s over the moon for you (naturally) and asks for your website address so she can tell everyone she knows about you, to which you reply,

“Yeah, well –  ah… it’s in the pipeline.”

I get it. It seemed easy when you played it out in your head, but when you took action…that’s when your confidence went to cake and everything suddenly felt incredibly overwhelming.

There’s lot’s of moving pieces most of which, you’ll only discover you need about 5 minutes before you need them. If you haven’t read the previous article I wrote about what website tools you need, you should to get up to speed  because today, I’m going to help you take the first step and put some of those tools to work for you.

Set up a WordPress website in 30 minutes or less.

You ready to setup a WordPress website so you never miss another opportunity again?

Great!

Because, in less than 30 minutes you can have //

  1. A hosting account set up
  2. A new & FREE domain name
  3. A WordPress website for your business.

Plus – If you already have website hosting elsewhere and would like to switch to GreenGeeks (ah – because they’re environmentally friendly yo!), I’ll also show you how to do that too!

Click play & get going… your 30 minutes starts now!

How to setup website hosting with GreenGeeks in just 6 easy steps.

LINKS MENTIONED // Why I choose to go GREEN

  • Click here to go to the GreenGeeks website. Once you’re there, visit the Web Hosting link in the menu.
  • GreenGeeks makes choosing a plan ridiculously simple by offering just one plan for small businesses. So select the Get Started button from this screen.
  • On the following screen you can choose a new domain name. If it’s available, you’ll be taken to the next screen.
PRO TIP // Double check for any spelling errors in your domain name before you continue.
ANOTHER PRO TIP // If you currently have a domain name you want to use, you can still get a free domain. Once your hosting service has been set up, you can use GreenGeeks domain migration service to move your new domain over to their hosting service.
  • Enter your information in the form provided, choose your payment cycle and complete your payment details then click the Create Account & Get Started button.
  • You’ll then be sent a handful of emails one of which you’ll have to take action on. Find the email titled, “IMMEDIATE VERIFICATION required for yourdomainname.com” and click the link in this email to verify your email address to complete your domain registration. You do have 15 days to do this but it’s just a click so do it now.
  • The most important email though is the one titled “Account Manager Login Details” which contains a link and details to log in to your new hosting account.

HIGH FIVE SISTER! You’ve just setup your website hosting! And you’re helping to save the planet too – you can cross that off your bucket list too 😉

How to migrate your website if you want to make the switch to GreenGeeks like I did.

(Skip to 4.23 of the above video)

If you currently have a website that’s being hosted elsewhere (ie; Hostgator, Bluehost etc…) and you’re ready to go green, I’m going to show you how to do it. But before you do, you’ll need the following information which you can find in the “Welcome Email” you would have received from your previous hosting provider. If you can’t find it, then contact them and request the following:

  • Control Panel URL
  • Control Panel Type
  • FTP Hostname
  • FTP / Control Panel Username
  • FTP / Control Panel Password

Go do it now, I’ll wait right here…

…..

….

..

You’re back! Let’s do it!

  • Log into your GreenGeeks Account Manager (URL & login details can be found in the email from GreenGeeks titled “Account Manager Login Details”) and from the navigation menu, hover over the Support option and click Site Migration Request.
  • From the drop down menu on this screen, choose the hosting account that you want the content (site) to be placed in. If you’re new to GreenGeeks then you’ll only have one.
  • Complete the form using the information you collected and hit Submit

AND YOU’RE DONE!

This process takes between 24-48 hours to complete but don’t panic, your website won’t crash or anything dramatic and, it’ll still be available to view and use by anyone who visits it.

How to setup a WordPress website in less than 5 minutes!

  • Login to your GreenGeeks Account Manager (URL & login details can be found in the email from GreenGeeks titled “Account Manager Login Details”)
  • At the bottom of the page locate the Quick Server Login section and select cPanel Login
  • On the following screen, scroll down and click Fantastico Deluxe
  • Select WordPress from the left navigation menu
  • Then select New Installation
  • In the Install on domain field select your new domain name from the drop down menu
  • Leave the Install on Directory field blank.
  • Complete the rest of the fields and click Install WordPress
  • On the next screen, you’ll be given the link to access the administration panel of your new WordPress Website. Bookmark the URL and note down your login details.

HOW EASY WAS THAT?! You just setup a WordPress website!

All that’s missing now are your words and some branding swag so keep your ears low to the ground because in the next post I’m going to share with you one of my most favorite parts of building a web site – How to gather inspiration to create a visual identity your peeps will fall madly in love with. It’s an important process that often gets overlooked.

In this lesson I’ll be sharing//

  • Why you absolutely can’t miss this step
  • Where to look for inspiration
  • How to zone in on the look & feel of your future website
  • And 5 steps to put it altogether!

It’s going to be another action packed, “get-shit-done” type of lesson not to mention, a good use of time to get your online home ready to share with your tribe.
